I bought the Burberry Cashmere Foundation when it launched a couple of weeks ago and decided to see how it compares to the Guerlain Tenue de Perfection since both have similar claims.
Burberry Cashmere Soft Matte Foundation ($52 for 1oz)
Packaging: It comes in a frosted, plastic bottle that feels lightweight and is travel friendly. It also has a convenient twist-lock pump that prevents product from spilling in transit.
Scent: There's no detectable fragrance when I smell it on the back of my hand and during application.
Color: It comes in 14 shades. Ochre No. 20 is too light for my NC30/35 skin tone. Beige No. 26 works well for me right now, while Honey No. 32 will be great in the summer when I have a tan. I love how golden the undertones are, which is perfect for my warm complexion.
Oil-Free Formula with SPF 20: The consistency is creamy without being too thick or too runny, and blends easily into the skin. It provides medium coverage and leaves a soft, matte finish that looks like your skin, but better. I love that it's non-drying, and provides enough coverage to even out the complexion & to cover minor redness without looking cakey. (Tip for Extra Coverage: After applying one layer onto the entire face, pump some foundation onto a synthetic brush and then tap the product onto the areas of concern for more coverage. Keep in mind that it's not going to build up to "full coverage" as full as other foundations, such as MAC Studio Fix, MAC Nourishing Waterproof and Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place.)
Longevity: Without a primer, it stays in place for at least 13 hours when set with a powder. I also have to blot my oily t-zone less often compared to MUFE HD & L'oreal True Match, and my makeup still looks fresh when I come home at night. (Other foundations can make my t-zone look like it got attacked by a lump of lard by the end of the day.)
Active Ingredients: Octinoxate 3.49% and Octisalate 4%. Inactive Ingredients: Water, Methyl Trimethicone, Isododecane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Diphenyl Dimethicone/Vinyl Diphenyl Dimethicone/Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Peg-10 Dimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Lauryl Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Glycerin, Peg/Ppg-18/18 Dimethicone, Caprylyl Methicone, Sodium Chloride, Octyldodecanol, Alcohol, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Vp/Va Copolymer, Phenoxyethanol, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Caprylyl Glycol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Propylene Carbonate, Disodium Edta, Acacia Senegal Gum, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Bht, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Citric Acid, Tocopherol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Lavandula Stoechas Extract. May Contain (+/-): Ci 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499 (Iron Oxides), Ci 77163 (Bismuth Oxychloride).
($63 for 1oz, also known as Timeproof Long-lasting Liquid Foundation)
Packaging: It's encased in a glass bottle that looks very luxe and has some weight to it. It also comes with a handy pump.
Scent: It has a lovely perfume scent. I personally don't mind it, but it's worth mentioning for those who have sensitive skin.
Color: Currently, it only comes in 6 shades. 02 Beige Clair is too light, while 03 Beige Naturel is not yellow enough for my warm complexion.
Formula with SPF 20: It's thicker in consistency, but the finish is very similar to the Burberry one. It still spreads easily without feeling heavy or looking cakey and provides buildable, medium to full coverage. Those who prefer medium coverage are not going to notice the difference, but I find that the Guerlain one requires less product to achieve extra coverage.
Longevity: It has the same lasting power as the Burberry one. (I find that wearing the "right" moisturizer underneath and setting the foundation with a powder helps substantially. A moisturizer that's too thick, creamy and hydrating will break down the foundation alot faster, while a moisturizer that's too light will emphasize dry, flaky patches and prevent foundation from adhering to the skin. Benefit's oil-free emulsion and Nars' Light Reflecting powder have been my must-haves for pairing with all my foundations.)
Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 2.92%. Inactive Ingredients: Water, Methyl Trimethicone, Dimethicone, Isododecane, Alcohol, Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Silica, Butylene Glycol, Mica, Aluminum Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Sodium Myristoyl Glutamate, Stearic Acid, Glyceryl Undecyl Dimethicone, Vp/Va Copolymer, Propylene Carbonate, Parfum (Fragrance), Sodium Chloride, Tromethamine, Bht, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Linalool, Citronellol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Benzoate, Geraniol. May Contain: Ci 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), Ci 77492, Ci 77491, Ci 77499 (Iron Oxides).
Bottom Line: Both formulas are a dream come true for those with oily and combination skin. They offer all the benefits (oil-control & long lasting) that a traditional matte foundation has without over drying the skin or looking flat. Given Guerlain's limited color selection, you may have better luck with Burberry's range of shades when finding your match.
Note: The Burberry Cashmere Soft Matte and Guerlain Tenue de Perfection Timeproof foundations are available at Sephora and Nordstrom.
